Importing from the UK? Here is What You Need to Know About New Trade Rules
A new trade deal with the UK means new options for your shipments. We break down what you need to check before claiming the new tariff treatment.
If you import goods from the United Kingdom, you now have a new option to consider. As of September 1, 2026, the UK has joined the CPTPP trade agreement. This introduces a new tariff treatment called the Comprehensive and Progressive United Kingdom Tariff (CPUKT)—coded as 35. CBSA Customs Notice 26-22
What is actually changing?
Think of this as a new "discount code" for your imports. Being eligible for Code 35 doesn't automatically mean your goods will be duty-free, but it gives you a new way to potentially lower your costs. The CBSA updated the official tariff documents on September 16, 2026, to include the UK, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man under this new treatment.
Should you use this new option?
Maybe! You still have access to the existing Canada–UK Trade Continuity Agreement (TCA). Having two options is great, but it means you need to do a little homework to see which one saves you more money. Because different agreements have different rules about where a product is made, one might be a better fit for your specific supply chain than the other.
3 simple steps to get it right
- Prove the origin. Just because a package comes from a UK address doesn't mean it counts as "UK origin" under trade rules. Make sure your supplier can provide the documentation showing your goods actually qualify.
- Get your paperwork in order. You need proof of origin to claim these savings. While there is no official "form" you must use, you do need to have all the right information on file. If your goods are worth CAD $3,300 or less, the rules are slightly more relaxed, but you still need to keep records that prove where the goods came from.
- Check the shipping route. Sometimes, how the goods get to Canada matters. If your shipment stops in other countries on the way here, make sure you meet the specific shipping requirements of the agreement you are claiming.
